War and Order

Details and Artist’s Notes

  • Statue:

    • Mascot

      • Libra is the only mascot of the Zodiac that isn’t alive (or attached to something alive, if you believe Aquarius is the vessel and not the pourer of water), so her inclusion as an inanimate object reflects its status as law and order, themselves

    • Bronze

      • Bronze often represents the righteous judgement of the gods, shown in both Christian and Hellenistic mythology

      • This metal has been equated to both the hard labor of bronze sickles and daggers to the bronze medals of Olympians and the bronze crowns of rulers

    • The Scale

      • The scales of justice are evenly yoked here; made of shells, this feature represents Venus, the ruler of Libra, and her birth from the ocean out of a clam shell

  • Myrtle tree:

    • Love and beauty are two of Libra’s major tenets and they also happen to be represented by the Myrtle trees featured in the background

  • Battle:

    • Librans are known to keep peace, but they’re lesser known for their roles in maintaining order, a role that sometimes requires a break in peace

    • Are they fighting to maintain peace? Are they breaking Libra’s order? Are they trying to carry out its law?

  • Dove:

    • Again with the peace? Yup, doves are known for their docile nature and often used as universal symbols of peace, surrender, and compassion
